Birchgrove House Alteration + Addition
An existing timber cottage on the Birchgrove peninsula overlooking Cockatoo Island is retained and extended to accommodate the requirements of a 5 person family. The additional space requirements are accommodated within a 3 storey extension overlooking the water at the rear. The character of each level is distinct, defined by different qualities of light, different relationships to the outside and different opportunities for views. A single stair connects all 3 levels, controlling light as it moves through the building - an elegant light fitting within the lounge and a carved light scoop to the level below.
